The Fleischman Endowed Lecture of 2025.
The Judaic Studies Program at George Washington University

Benjamin Sommer is Professor of Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary and Senior Fellow at the Kogod Center for Contemporary Jewish Thought at the Shalom Hartman Institute. He will discuss the ways modern understandings of prayer influenced biblical critical scholarship on the psalms. As part of his argument, he will also show the extent to which traditional Jewish worship is countercultural from a modern point of view.
